Crooked Front Tooth

I have a very crooked front tooth that protrudes slightly, and I have several cavities in other teeth. Do you think I am a candidate for porcelain veneers?

Trey,

From what you’re telling me, you sound like an excellent candidate for porcelain veneers. If your cavities are on front teeth and if they’re large on any one tooth, it may be a good idea to have an all-porcelain crown on that tooth. A large cavity would weaken the tooth, and a crown would strengthen it, where a porcelain veneer would just cover the front of the tooth and wouldn’t be adequate treatment if you have a large cavity.

Other questions:

  • What does it mean to say I have leaky fillings? How can I know if I really do?
  • What is your opinion of the new Lumineers? I’ve been to two dentists. One of them wants to do Lumineers, the other says I should have crowns.
  • Is there a way to put porcelain veneers over crowns? I have crowns across the front, but would like them whiter.
  • I had a dentist recommend an all porcelain crown for my front tooth but a porcelain fused to metal crown for my molar. What’s the difference?
  • Do the white fillings last as long as amalgam? I was told that they don’t.
