| There are two basic types of porcelain crowns.
One type has a metal foundation, the other type is all porcelain.
In dental school, dentists are taught to do porcelain
fused to metal crowns. Dr. Karen Blair in Naperville, Illinois, however,
is passionate about how her work looks. In her opinion, porcelain fused to
metal simply isn't good enough for front teeth. Because these crowns have
metal underneath, an opaquing layer is required under the porcelain, so
they never look naturally translucent. In addition, they will invariably
get a dark line at the gumline over time, which becomes very noticeable on
front teeth. You can probably tell when a friend has porcelain fused to
metal on a front tooth.
But when a porcelain crown is made without metal,
it can be made to look exactly like a natural tooth, with no unnatural
opacity and no dark line at its base. |
